(File photo by Jiraporn Kuhakan)For the nearly 24,000 commuters of Bangkok who rely on the Bangkok Rapid Transit (BRT) system to go to work and back, the news is bad. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), citing a big financial loss, has decided to terminate the BRT service as early as April. That is not a big commuter base to boast about, especially for a project that was undertaken at a cost of more than 2.5 billion baht. But is the BMTA not another transport agency that has made more than 100 billion baht in losses and continues to accumulate losses of 4-5 billion baht annually? To add to this, the State Railway of Thailand is also operating at a loss, with more than 100 billion baht in accumulated debt so far.
